Welcome to ANMT - the place for musical theatre writing!

The Academy for New Musical Theatre (ANMT) is a global community of writers, composers, producers, and actors who work together to create new musicals. In addition to staging entertaining and engaging musicals to delight audiences, we also offer opportunities for talented individuals who want to join our community of musical theatre professionals (live in Los Angeles, or virtually on the internet).

We have a variety of programs for writers, lyricists, composers, performers, producers, and others who have a passion for musical theatre.

ANMT is also a registered not-for-profit organization with 501(c)(3) status.

The Writers’ Workshop

ANMT offers a core curriculum for musical theatre writing and more. We enable writers, composers, and lyricists to enhance their skills through craft specific labs and to share their knowledge and experience through collaborative work assignments. The core curriculum culminates in a 15-minute musical that is cast, rehearsed, directed, produced, and presented to a live audience.

For writers who already have some experience in musical theater writing, we offer an audio Script Overview and in-depth video Analysis through our Annual Search for New Musicals. You can submit your original work and choose to take advantage of a 20-30-minute audio evaluation and/or a 2-3 hour detailed analysis of your musical.

The Performers’ Workshop

In addition to musical theatre writing programs, ANMT also offers intensive training for serious musical theatre performers. Participants have the opportunity to join Broadway actor Joshua Finkel and music director Jake Anthony for a comprehensive Performers’ Workshop. Learn about audition techniques, cold reading, comedic performance skills, and more.

The Developers’ Workshop

Have an idea for a musical but don’t know where to start? We can help you create a musical from scratch. We can work with your writers or assemble a team for you. You don’t need to have a complex outline outright; we can start with a simple one-sentence idea and take it from there.

If you already have a draft for a musical but need some professional help improving it, we can guide you each step of the way as you develop it.
