want to develop a musical?

The Academy for New Musical Theatre has a few different opportunities avaialable for producers who are shepherding an existing project through development or looking to get started with a new musical on the ground floor.

Check out the list of opportunities below, and click any heading for more specific info.

New Musicals Initiative

Got an idea for a musical, but you want to do some small-scale workshop version before deciding whether you want to produce it? We've created a business model based on the old movie studio model: the producer is in charge. We'll find you lyricists, bookwriters and composers (unless you have some you already want to work with). We'll then support the musical from idea through outline and present you with fifteen minutes' worth. If you like what you see, we'll keep supporting the work with actors, music directors, directors, and dramaturgs, in return for which at the end of the day, you produce a public reading. No obligation for production.

Submit a Musical - to the SEARCH FOR NEW MUSICALS

Are you working with a writer who needs some feedback on their new musical? Do you need an evaluation or workshop of your property before you invest money in a production? We will read a new musical (and listen to the demo) and then provide some honest, constructive feedback to help your team make their musical even better. If that's what you're looking for, then click here to decide what level of evaluation you'd like (from 1-2 hour audio evaluation to 2-3 hour detailed video feedback to 6-8 hour staff table reading and feedback).
ADDED BONUS: Every script submitted to us prior to the annual July 15th deadline (at any level) will automatically be entered into our SEARCH FOR NEW MUSICALS and be eligible to win the first prize of a workshop session with our Academy Repertory Company followed by a public reading as part of our Concert Reading Series.

Biz of the Musical Theatre Biz Conference

ANMT presents the Fourth Bi-Annual BIZ OF THE MUSICAL THEATRE BIZ CONFERENCE over the weekend of July 20-22, 2012 at the NoHo Arts Center in North Hollywood. Broadway writers and producers, Los Angeles artistic directors, independent producers, entertainment attorneys, and more are being assembled for the panels in this jam-packed weekend devoted to musical theatre writers and producers...and how to get their work produced. Registration will open in mid-May. To stay in touch and up-to-date - click the link to the BIZ above.

Theatre Producers Academy

ANMT recommends the online Theatre Producers Academy where you will find out how to produce plays and musicals without losing your shirt - or your sanity! Whether you're a playwright thinking about producing your own material, a member of an acting company, or just someone who loves theatre, and wants to produce plays and musicals that enlighten, entertain and inspire audiences, you recognize that you're looking at a major undertaking, and you need to learn the art, the business, and the process of producing live theatre.

Resources

ANMT's resources for producers include the Talent Bank (full of performers eager to perform in your new production); the Online Catalog (where you can find information about brand new musicals ripe for production); useful links to musical theatre sites; and much more.
