Vampires, Neanderthals and Musical Theatre!

ANMT is jumping with projects being developed through our New Musicals Initiative. Works as diverse as rock, futuristic Latino, and a musical for deaf audiences. (Vampires, futuristic immigrant smugglers, and clans of Neandrathalic warring tribes.) This edition highlights three musicals which were workshopped last week alone. A NEW MUSICAL FOR DEAF WEST

That sound you're not hearing in North Hollywood these days is coming from a collaboration between ANMT and Deaf West Theatre. We're developing a "deaf musical" together, and we're having a fascinating time figuring out what that might be. Traditionally, Deaf West has had an amazing track record producing traditional musicals, sung by hearing actors who are double-cast or shadowed by signing actors; their Big River was an enormous critical success and played across the country and Broadway.

Creating New Musicals From Scratch

ANMT's innovative developmental model is paying off this season with opportunities for many writers. Our partnership with the Drama Department at UCIrvine has resulted in the development of four new musicals. Aging Out by Hillary Rollins, Tara Redepenning, and Darin Goulet will receive a full production at UCIrvine in January,2011. Powder Puff Pilots by Marian Partee, Noelle Donfeld, and Cindy O'Connor and A Black & White Christmas by Chana Wise and Carl Johnson are under consideration for full productions in the 2011-12 season.

Festival of New Musicals at UC Irvine

ANMT's FIRST PRODUCTION IS A BIG SUCCESS!

ANMT Gives Crash Course in Creating, Selling Musicals

By Les Spindle The Academy for New Musical Theatre held its latest Biz of the Musical Theatre Biz conference June 27-29 at ANMT's North Hollywood headquarters and June 30 at Burbank's Colony Theatre. This event, presented every other summer, offers wide-ranging advice to composers, librettists, and lyricists hoping to get their musicals produced. ANMT's mission is to nurture the continuing growth of the musical theatre art form and to support the efforts of its craftsmen. It's a West Coast descendant of New York's BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theater Workshop, founded in 1979.

The Academy for New Musical Theatre is proud to announce the results of our first Search for New Voices in American Musical Theatre. First Prize: The Water. The Water will receive a workshop with the Academy Repertory Company at the Academy for New Musical Theatre, followed by an in-depth dramaturgical feedback session with the ANMT staff (May 2008), ANMT staff support for a revision of the draft, and a slot in the ANMT Concert Reading Series at the Colony Theatre in the 2008-09 season.

Reservations for 'A Salon with Stephen Sondheim,' to be hosted by the Academy for New Musical Theatre at 1:00 on Thursday March 13, sold out in three minutes. Tickets went on sale via the Academy's website exactly at 10:00am on February 1, and were sold out by 10:03. A waiting list as long as the reservation list was complete by 10:10am.
