We've changed our name! We're now New Musicals Inc. After several years of marketing research, creative meetings with our Board, staff, actors, writers, audience members and donors, we came to the conclusion that "Academy for New Musical Theatre" implied only HALF of what we wanted -- an august place of training and learning -- but for many people it did not imply production, development, partnerships with theatres and producers, all of which are equally important to us.

We are honored to have one of our spring projects sponsored by Disney Imagineering! Disney is supporting a second season of our New Voices Project, designed to showcase new writers under the age of 26. The New Voices Project was launched last summer as part of the STAGES Musical Theatre Festival, produced by the New Musicals Initiative. Five young writers from across the country were chosen to have their material showcased and reviewed. The writers showcased at the launch were Amar Benkhoukha, Ion Constantine, Nick Jester, Christopher Byron Pratt, and Noah Reece.

Stages Musical Theatre Festival comes to Los Angeles again -- after 15 years in Chicago, it now returns for the second time to Los Angeles, so this will be the 17th annual festival! Brought to you by the New Musicals Initiative at the Academy for New Musical Theatre, this special edition of the Festival will feature 16 performances, 8 musicals, 38 actors featuring the work of 18 writers.

The Festival takes place the weekend of August 23-25, in TWO theatres across the street from each other in North Hollywood. The Festival is designed so you can see all eight shows, with a $50 Festival Pass. Or feel free to buy individual tickets ($10-15 each). We're developing a "deaf musical" together, and we're having a fascinating time figuring out what that might be. Our partnership with the Drama Department at UCIrvine has resulted in the development of four new musicals. Aging Out by Hillary Rollins, Tara Redepenning, and Darin Goulet will receive a full production at UCIrvine in January,2011. By Les Spindle The Academy for New Musical Theatre held its latest Biz of the Musical Theatre Biz conference June 27-29 at ANMT's North Hollywood headquarters and June 30 at Burbank's Colony Theatre. This event, presented every other summer, offers wide-ranging advice to composers, librettists, and lyricists hoping to get their musicals produced. ANMT's mission is to nurture the continuing growth of the musical theatre art form and to support the efforts of its craftsmen. It's a West Coast descendant of New York's BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theater Workshop, founded in 1979.

The Academy for New Musical Theatre is proud to announce the results of our first Search for New Voices in American Musical Theatre. First Prize: The Water. Book by Tim Werenko and Jeff Hylton, Lyrics by Jeff Hylton, Music by Georgia Stitt. The Water will receive a workshop with the Academy Repertory Company at the Academy for New Musical Theatre, followed by an in-depth dramaturgical feedback session with the ANMT staff (May 2008), ANMT staff support for a revision of the draft, and a slot in the ANMT Concert Reading Series at the Colony Theatre in the 2008-09 season.

Tickets went on sale via the Academy's website exactly at 10:00am on February 1, and were sold out by 10:03. A waiting list as long as the reservation list was complete by 10:10am.
